The Best Version of You
Lord send friends that unlock greatness...
Good Monday Morning!
If you’re a football fan, you are aware, my guy from my home team Philadelphia Eagles Saquan Barkley is having an amazing year 🏈! He’s doing things - like hurdling backwards over grown men - that haven’t been seen or done before on the football field.
After 6 seasons with the NY Giants who were unwilling to pay him his worth, Barkley was picked up by the rival Eagles. When recently asked about the phenomenal season he is having on his new team, Saquan responded with respect for his old team before noting, his new team just fit him better. The team is having fun and the camaraderie on/off the field is allowing Saquan to be as he said, “the best version of myself”.
Saquan Barkley is the same quick, powerful, talented player he was in NY. But by changing teams he’s unlocked greatness that was hindered until getting on the right team.
There’s something for us all to consider in Barkley’s success & comments. Men benefit from men in their life that unlock the best of who they are, not in football but in Christ.
Before David achieved great success and did the things we marvel at for the Lord, he was hunted by King Saul for about 8 years. At 1 point, David hid in the cave of Adullam in 1 Samuel 22. In addition to his father and brothers, 400 men were in the cave to support David. Side Note: David wrote Psalms 34, 57 & 142 in the cave - read em for further understanding.
Look at how the men the Lord sent into David’s life are characterized: And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men.1 Samuel 22:2
None of us would teach for this group of distressed, broke, bitter men. Yet, God knew what David needed to carry out the Lord’s plan for his life. Clearly, each of us is responsible for our growth and development in the Lord. At the same time, you can ask the Lord to build a healthy team of brothers to unlock who you are in the Lord.
As a personal note about a month ago, I ask the Lord to send men “ I can be myself around “. Since then, the Lord has sent “golf buddies” and other guys that love talking about God’s Word, and dad’s with teenage sons…into my life.
God knows what you need, ask for a team of men that help unlock you in the Lord (whether they know it or not): Lord, send friends into my life that help me be a better man - for your purpose.
