How to: Stop Wasting Time

Proverbs 16:1-3

Good Monday Morning!

Today, I want to share 3 verses found in Proverbs 16 continually shape & reshape my thoughts about what’s important in life and where I spend my energy.

Connecting & applying truths of Scripture to my everyday life does 1 of 2 things at all times.

  1. A Report card showing where I need to grow 💯

  2. A Mirror reflecting the truth of who I am (so I’m not self-deceived) 🪞

Proverbs 16:1-3 does both…

The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.

All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit.

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. Proverbs 16:1-3

  • Proverbs 16:1 - Plans of the Heart: My plans are my plans because they are my plans. I think them up, write them down and carry them out. But the answer: Whether my plans come to fruition or not…well now that belongs to the Lord.

  • Proverbs 16:2 - Pure in his own eyes: What I do always make sense to me. I want a car, house, new job for reasons that seem clean to me. That’s why I do what I do - it makes sense to me, in my own eyes. But the Lord: [but] in contrast, the Lord weighs the spirit or in some translations - He weighs the motive ⚖️. I tell myself I want to have, be and do for reasons that make sense to me. But God weighs my spirit and He knows why I really want what I want and do what I do. {Great place for prayer - God why do I really want, say, do…🙌🏽

  • Proverbs 16:3 - Commit Your Work: The Hebrew word used here for commit, means to “roll”. Think of rolling a boulder or car uphill. As you’re pushing hard to get that car up the hill, God’s on the other side pulling the car up the hill - for you. With that understanding: commit or roll your work/energy to the Lord. As you push, He pulls what’s bigger than you up the hill. And He Will: For me, it’s the certainty! We push - He pulls and He will make your plans stable.

Report Card and a Mirror: Making plans without God is pointless: He has the answer & He knows the real motive of my plans. Pushing boulders up hill is tiring & He alone establishes the plans for my life.

Verse by verse, spend time reflecting on each of those verses this week. Ask the Lord to make it clear where time is wasted in plans that are yours but not His. Seek deeper understanding for the plans and direction for where you are & where you’re going. Lord, where am I wasting time pushing up hill alone because these are my plans and not your plans for me…
